World at War 27: Operations Olympic and Coronet

Olympic and Coronet is a hypothetical simulation on a regiment-brigade level of the planned invasion of Japan. Olympic is the planned November 1945 invasion of Kyushu, the southernmost Japanese Home Island, while Coronet is the planned March 1946 invasion of the Tokyo Plain.

As the Japanese were committed to a strict operational plan organized around the theme of an aggressive beach defence, the basic version of Olympic and Coronet is a solitaire game in which a single player controls both opposing forces. During solitaire play, you should alternately direct each opposing force so as to maximize the ability of each to fulfil its particular victory conditions. You will have complete control over all American (US) units, while the Japanese units will be restricted by their doctrine rules. To as great a degree as possible, those prescribe how and when Japanese units move and fight. The Japanese doctrine rules fill the role of the absent Japanese player. In addition to the basic solitaire version, rules for a two-player game, and optional rules for the solitaire and two-player versions are included.

The Blitzkrieg Legend covers the German offensive in May of 1940 which shocked the world by capturing Belgium, Holland, and France, as well as pushing the British army off the continent in less than a month.

This is the 12th game in the Operations Combat Series (OCS).

Gamers sometimes look at the campaign's result as a foregone conclusion, but Manstein's daring strike through the Ardennes could have easily gone awry. Hindsight suggests a different series of results were not only possible, but actually quite likely. In many ways, the Germans were lucky.

The player's French, Belgian, Dutch, and BEF forces have not yet mastered WWII's faster pace of action, and therefore are slow to react and don't fight with full action Ratings in Move Mode. The Allies are also forced to adopt the historical Dyle Plan, which leaves the French with inadequate reserves behind the Ardennes and too many of their best forces committed to Belgium. An available "If I Was in Charge..." version allows both sides to explore different deployments.

Victory requires the French to protect Paris, Verdun and Metz (the player cannot just abandon the Maginot Line). Belgium and Holland surrender given certain situations (giving the Germans several axis from which to choose). The BEF may be forced to evacuate and the Germans are encouraged to batter it as much as they can before it does.

Special rules have been chosen to evoke the full flavour of the campaign. For instance, the Maginot Line is given its historical due, shown as a strong right shield that can unfortunately be outflanked through the Ardennes. Rules for special operations are something new to OCS, and these can capture enemy bridges and forts. As mentioned above, the BEF can get isolated or mauled as part of the victory conditions, and if this happens a ragtag assemblage rides to the rescue: RN Destroyers, special Evacuation Ports, elite Irish and Welsh battalions, and even some Spitfires finally appear to provide some top-cover. Mix in the occasional Pause - an event that tugs sharply on the panzers' leash - and you've the kind of chrome that make The Blitzkrieg Legend a tremendous tool for historical study as well as an exciting source of gaming pleasure.

The Blitzkrieg Legend is also a game with tremendous replay value. Presented are multiple scenarios. The longest is just 13 turns and fits on a standard 4'x6' table. Series veterans know the depth of the model can lead to some long and complex turns, but here we have an entire campaign that can easily be played to the finish.

In 1861, the northernmost part of the Louisiana Purchase becomes the Dakota Territory. In Western Town it is 1864 and the conquest and development of this rugged and dangerous territory is underway. You take the role of a marshal of one of the towns in the territory, working to establish a foothold in Indiana Country and, if possible, gaining enough attention for a visit from Washington D.C. from a member of President Lincoln's Cabinet.

Each turn you have only three orders to give, corresponding to the activities generated by the occupants of three of your buildings. Developing your town, by constructing new buildings, expands you options. But to win the game, the most important element will be to skilfully choose the buildings you wish to use. Choices made by the other marshals (your opponents) can determine which building will generate their benefits, and which will not! To achieve victory, you will need to keep an eye on the other marshals and anticipate their moves: develop your own town; prepare for Indian raids against you; and cater to the political interest in Washington D.C. Not an easy task, this Marshal business! Do all of this better than your fellow Marshals, and success and prosperity (as well as victory) will be yours in Western Town!
