Title: Saturdays @ Spirit Games
Post by: Zarniwoop on 23 February 2012, 16:15:37
Hi gang,

Well as my original group's (Lefthandrule) gaming is looking to be sporadic at best or possibly non-existent for 2012 it looks like I may have some Saturday's free each month.

I have spoken to Phil and with a bit of co-ordination of Calendars we should be able to run some gaming at the shop during the Day and possibly extending into the evening (subject to other commiments on the Managements side :) )

So the idea would be to either Roleplay or Boardgame (maybe both depending on numbers), on the RPG front I would suggest one-off games or short scenarios (maybe 2-3 sessions).

I would suggest starting this in March, I will check with Phil at the weekend for available dates during this month.

Please reply to this post if:
You are interested (Please add comments if there are any caveats to your attendance, family commitments, transport issues etc.).
Whether you would like to RPG or Boardgame
Whether you would Play or GM
If you wish to GM please provide quick details of likely systems and possible length of game

Or anything else you can think of that I have forgotten or overlooked

Cheers

Sounds like a good idea. The only problem is, my rota at work is pretty unreliable. Theoretically it looks like I work sundays but not saturdays at the moment, but that's likely to change after two weeks anyway (With no warning). That certainly rules out me running anything, but I might in theory be interested in RPing or even the occaisional boardgame in theory, on such random saturdays as I might be able to drop in.

I would be interested in board gaming on Saturdays.  I certainly couldn't commit to every Saturday as I do have family commitments, but I should be able to make it a couple of times a month.

The plan (such as it is) would be 1 Saturday a month (as that is what we do with Lefthandrule), the schedule for this is subject to table space commitments at the Shop.

We'll have a chat with Phil on Wed Night for what Saturday we can squeeze in for March.

Ok Folks  First Saturday looks like the 17th March.

I propose Boardgames for the first one until we gauge attendance and interest levels.

A 12 start sounds good to me, gives me time to get up and ready.

I'll have a think about what I mgith take along with me to play, maybe go for some slightly longer games as we will have more time than on a wed night.

Had a brilliant time all the better for knowing that I really ought to have been either sleeping or doing something work related. I played Belfort & lost horribly but I can see why every one wants a copy its a lovely game which oozes theme & production quality & I must play it again now I have something like a clue of how to & before I forget what I learned.

I also got to play Lords of Waterdeep before it was released & though its not the best game of its type, its at heart a resource gathering/ managing worker placement game & wears its theme rather lightly. It is well designed straightforward & played in about an hour. I would have no complaint about replaying it & would recommend it to any one unfamiliar with this sort of game as its quite a good teacher of all the basic concepts of this sort of game.

I finished off with a quick game of Kingdom builder another nice game which I had heard a lot of good about but not played. Having done so I as ever want to play it again but given the choice of all the ones we played would probably chose Belfort then Waterdeep first.

I cant wait till next month

Well I got there early, which ended up being a bonus as Andy turned up early and unexpectedly then Evilginger arrived early!.

So we cracked on with a game of Belfort (http://spiritgames.co.uk/gamesin.php?UniqueNo=5872) this game is really well crafted with excellent components and exceptional gameplay. After a quick run-through the rules we started and Andy seemed to take to this straight away taking an early lead which proved to be a decisive one as well. Myself and Evil ended up fighting for second place, I sadly missed out on a guild buying spree between the other two.

The final scores for this were: Paul 36, Simon 32 and Andy 55

We then broke for a quick lunch, well Evil had already ordered from Rumbletums (http://www.rumbletumsburton.co.uk/) and arranged for delivery on the shop but living up to his Evil handle did not bring a menu for the rest of us to share in this  ::)

Whilst I went for a rummage to Sainsburys to collect some food Andy was taking a look at the rules for Lords of Waterdeep (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/product.aspx?x=dnd/products/dndacc/388510000) which Spirit Games (http://www.spiritgames.co.uk) had been given a pre-release copy to demo. When I returned we punched this out and Andy started to run through the rules but had to step out of playing as he had to leave. Chris turned up in time to get involved in the rules summary and we got started with Andy DM'ing until he had to go. This is a really well put together Worker placement style game with a D&D theme thrown over it. The theme does not really feel worked into the gameplay and could easily be replaced with another. That said the mechanics of the game are extremely solid and well thought out. The game flows well as well as being easy to pick up with minimal effort, it also plays quite quickly which is very good for this style of game. I really enjoyed playing this and the components are well made with an excellent insert that takes all of the pieces after punching, excellent job. I would gladly play this again.

Final scores for this were: Paul 129, Evil 116 and Chris 137

We then broke out Chris's WizWar (http://spiritgames.co.uk/gamesin.php?UniqueNo=6044) this is up to the usual Fantasy Flight Games (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/) standard the components are well made and the artwork superb. Players take on the role of wizard battling to grab each others treasure and/or defeat their fellow wizards to win the competition. Its a fast paced games where players move their wizards and cast spells or use items to aid them. I really enjoyed this, despite getting splatted by Chris thus giving him the win.

Finally we broke out Kingdom Builder (http://spiritgames.co.uk/gamesin.php?UniqueNo=5926) to end the day. Just as we started Caz arrived after her day out, so we managed to pull her into the game as well. As I have mentioned before I really love this game it has such variety, with no two games ever being the same. The components are well made and the rules easy to pick up and teach to new players. This was an extremely close game in the end, the closest I have played to date in fact. Paul:50, Caz:51, Simon:51 and Chris: 47

I really enjoyed the day, so thanks to everyone who came and played games.

The next event should be on the 21st April so if you fancy coming along to try some games then I'll see you there.

I forgot about Wiz War which is very defiantly on my to get list I have played it before but a very long time ago. I liked it & would have liked a revenge game after Chris stole the victory quite so easily. Its a quick enough game that you can do that sort of thing without it taking all evening.

Ok does any one have any plans for this as I posted my suggestions above I was rather expecting some response. I especially want to run Dux Britannarium if you would humour me whilst I still remember what I learned in the Play test on Saturday. The other thing is any one wanting to do any roleplaying? I ask as it was always on the Menu at Lefthandrule events. I would run it if you wanted me to but I am doing a lot of Stuff at the moment so would any one else be prepared to run something? somthing short & new or unfamiliar would be my suggestion.

I would like to expand this into RPG as well, but it all depends on who attends and what they want to do. The first has a small attendence but enough to prove the idea was worthwhile, I will be bringing various boardgames and I could bring some RPG but without a definate number or desire to play boardgames are an easier catch-all.

Hi Gang,

Well I looked at the calendar for the Shop for June with Phil and the "best" date is the 9th June.
This will only have Vanguagard in the shop so there should be plenty of space.

I Knew this date was familiar and when I checked I will unfortunately be away in IronBridge. However, Phil pointed out this was still the "best" date.  So I have agreed to organise this anyway, even though I will not be there :(

So someone else will have to take notes and post a report of the games played that day. (I know this wont happen but at least I have asked ;) )

So as always this will run from 12 till late and depending on how many/who turns up this will be Boardgames / RPG or a mix of both. Feel free to post here to arrange details.

I will re-post this on BGG as well.

ps.
I may be able to make the 16th / 30th if people want to arrange any extra sessions, but we will have to share with Yu-Gi-Oh which means we may be restricted to the back table.

I will be at the Shop from about one 1300 hours & will be withdrawing to the Pub or some where around 1800 which is chucking out time for a Saturday, though I intend to stay at the shop & do fun stuff as late as possible. I will be board gaming until the Role players turn up at which point I will be mentally torturing them.

This session did more or less nothing as I was the only one who made it & could stay. I ended up helping out till my players for A Police woman's war arrived & we adjourned to the Roebuck across the road. The shop was however rather buisy dispite the dearth of regulars, the regular Cardfigt Vanguard Tournament was also shorter in numbers then usual though they seemed to be having much fun & I would have joined in had the shop been less busy.

After a police woman's war we adjourned to the Alfed with Tilki & Dust for the best steak I have had in a long time and much chat till well well past my bedtime.

I however lookforward to the next sesion when Zarni will be back in charge......

Indeed we shall

As for Yesterday I managed to get a game of Forbidden Island which we lost finally because the last artefact recovery sit sank before we could get to it but mostly because we got to many waters rising cards early which ramped the difficulty up horribly.

We then got a game of Glory to Rome which I lost horribly largely because I was suffering form the effects of too, too many early starts but its a lovely game despite it being a bit of an effort to comprehend initially & having dodgy artwork & a dreadful box towards the end the caffeine kicked in so I think I did a bit better. I really want to play it again & its not all that long or did not feel it.

We finished off with Kung fu Fighting which is a splendidly silly game of Hong Kong action style martial arts which can be played either as a team game or as we did it as a free for all.

I for one had a good time with lovely people & got my boardgames fix & a pint of good beer form the shop bar, the only down side was that Phil was in Leicester so not avalible to torment with games he couldn't play as he was working >:D

will defiantly do it again & recommend it to any one who has the Saturday free....

For all the expected low turn out things seemed to go rather well & whilst I did not get to play any thing I did have a Random Pint after with Zarni & got a two player game of Eclipse with Rakshi using the Supernova expansion & playing as Aliens. I thoroughly enjoyed it as it seems to be scaled well to play two player. The one thing I did not do was take any account of the  time it took. I like the supernova expansion as they give more incentive to get your research going as they are relay good sectors for the fringes & you dont want to lose them.

Next event will be on the 25th November.

Technically this is a Sunday, but Phil has found a "Free" venue he wants to try out, which is attached to a pub ;) so we are moving this months to then to share the space allowing Phil & Sally to join in...

Please post any comments on the thread for that event aptly named Autumn B&P "Free Expansion" (http://www.bigbangburgerbar.co.uk/Forum/index.php?topic=5280.msg11818;topicseen#msg11818)
