Post by: EvilGinger on 21 May 2011, 12:40:34
I will be doing something a bit different having done two linked WWI games recently I am going to run something simple using the Lardies Platoon Level WWII rules Troops weapons & tactics. I am working on the Scenario but have an encounter between reconnaissance patrols in Normandy 1944

Advancing cautiously through the early morning, is patrol strung out across the French field, Sergeant Albert Marston surveyed the canal line there was no sign of the the tanks the RAF had caught here yesterday or of the bridge they had been trying to cross but the small village clustered either side of the canal had been hit hard and recently some of the houses where still smouldering & the smell of burning hung heavy on the air.  the fields around it & road approaching where liberally peppered with fresh craters.

To be continued.....

Mean while on the far side of the canal Fieldwebel Heinrich Weiss a canny veteran of the Ostfront who had until a few days ago been on "holiday" in France as he saw it lead his men through the morning along a track towards the small village that lay athwart the canal his men followed him on foot for all they where Panzer Grenadiers after yesterday it being deemed to risky to move vehicles in daylight to find out what had happened to the company of tanks the  RAF had hit as they tried to cross a foot bridge which the blasted French had marked the same as a road bridge on their cursed maps......

Scenario

This is a Variation of the Patrol encounter from Troops weapons & Tactics Page 104

Each side consists of a platoon of infantry without support elements   tasked with finding out information in a bombed out village in Normandy.

Lay out
The area of action is split into two by a canal which runs more or less straight across the length of the board. around it are fields & in the centre of the area the village this is fairly intact on the German side of the Canal but increasingly damaged as the canal is approached & on the British side of the canal where the place was heavily bombed yesterday evening when the RAF spotted a number of tanks here. The canal is crossed by a substantial stone foot bridge in the centre of the village which may or not be intact.

Objectives
For Both sides

Determine the fate of the armour
Drive off any enemy forces encountered
Ascertain the state of the bridge as whilst its only a foot bridge it does bypass an obstacle which the Germans are using in the defence of Calais & which ironically also impedes German local counter attacks.

I plan a larger follow up game to this as I did to Storming the Hun & as with Storming the Hun I the playing time should be 40-60 minutes.

I am now planing the Scenery I need for this which works out as being one length of canal seven or eight shells of buildings, about three of these will be fairly intact for the German side of the canal the rest much more damaged for the British side of the canal,  a road & a bridge as well as much substantial hedge line  as I can construct it is after all in Brocarge country. I will do the hedges as I did the Barbed wire for Storming the Hun but build a bank on the 6" ruler with cardboard & covered with towling & top it off with a hedge strip.  The road & canal will be done similarly with narrow banks with the road being about 3" wide and sections & the canal about 6" but I will have to check the width of the span of the bridge model to be sure.

I will endeavour to take and post pictures as I go on.

No more progress on the scenery front yet but I did get a box of the Plastic soldier Company's 1943-45 Germans form Spirit Games  which are now means I have a painted infantry platoon, I have ordered  the British equivalent as well. This will give me sufficient troops for the scenario here, but I am considering getting some of Valiant's Germans & British infantry & possibly a few vehicles, see its starting.

Nice figures though some of the poses are a I think a bit odd they paint up well & look the part.

Which would add heavy weapons & more variety of pose to the above equally nice figures having looked at them in the flesh but the box art could put you off a bit they seem to be comparable in size with the Plastic soldier models & I will be getting some this week end as  Spirit have the top box in stock at the moment.

The British form PSC & Valiant are here not seen either yet in the flesh but I am looking forward to doing so.

I am still waiting for the British but I have both the Plastic Soldier Company (PSC)  & Valiant Germans and whilst they are not really comparable for size both are very nice figures, my favourite are the Valiant which have better poses & feature the heavy support weapons in the same box I also like the detail on them a bit better than I do the PSC ones. I am sure that PSC will do a support weapons box for the Germans as they have for the Russians

Have all the forces painted up for both sides finally only a week later than planed & I am begining the final push on sorting out the scenery unfortunately the hedges will not be finished as I have not been able to locate any one in Burton who does upholstery foam  so they will have to be represented by the bases I made for them for now. I have the canal done & ready to paint & I am working on the ruined village.

I may yet have hedges as I have located a source for foam in Burton thanks to one of the Members of the Portal Games club & I will try to get hold of some tommorrow.

The scenery building goes on apace with the canal finished but & the Village sections being built I have planed three sections of houses & have two of them started & the third marked  out on its base, but I need a bit more stuff for making floors & bits of roofs. I will have a look for the foam today as that should be a quick job once I get hold of it, since all that need be done is to cut it into strips affix it to the bases which are already made. harden it with diluted white glue & then paint. the only trouble is that the glue can take some time to go off so I need to get the foam today.

I may if I get the time do some trees out of the foam I dont use for hedges.

I now have in process four sections of houses all ruined but some more intact than others . ten feet of hedge & the foam to finish off the hedge lines & perhaps to make a few trees I have stopped only because the glue needs to dry & I hope that will have happened by the time I get back from the game tonight so I can continue the terrain making frenzy I am in. I am considering making a couple of ruined gardens for the houses especially as I also have some thinner foam which would I think make good decorative hedges.

not entirely sure that I am going to get every thing done for tomorrow but I am intending to stay up all night to do so. I suspect that the hedges will remain a bit blue, unpainted,  for this run through but I am treating this as a play test of the Scenario. I will have the cards & figures ready however.

The rules will be a PDF viewed on my ancient laptop as if I am finishing off scenery tonight printing it out will be more than I can manage.

I will be ready to run at Spirit Games from twelve noon to about five, after which I will if I am still even semi functional be going to Raiders.

It should still be fun sleep deprivation not withstanding.

is unfortunately not going to run today after all as I crashed about 1.30 am and am currently awakeish only due to large doses of coffee & that's not going to last. I will rearrange it at a later date.

I am also more than usually murderously psychotic & don't really think I am fit company of any one till I have had 12+ hours sleep.

Post by: EvilGinger on 19 June 2011, 10:42:52
Has now recovered & thinking about making arrangements to run this scenario a new, I will keep you posted, but I woke up properly today with all sorts of ideas for improving the set up for this game, & in general getting it all ready before I organize a run as that was really one of the reasons I got so knackered & it didn't happen was pulling all nighters to get the scenery finished. I had done the figures well apart from the extra German in each group as I had messed up the strengths because I had forgotten when painting them that they had dismounted the vehicle drivers but even those where done in time if at the last minute.

New additions to the scenery, I have decided to add a couple of Hovels buildings to the village the majority of which I have scratch built likely a church & a row of shops

I am also doing some Hedged road sections and more short 6" sections of hedge line as 12" sections I made 15 feet of bowed a bit & the 6" ones did not.

I will also be using milliput to do the banks as Das shrinks too much making the bowing some what worse.
