The Victory of Arminius

The Romans called him "Arminius," but he was just "Hermann" to the Germans. He had grown up in Rome as an honoured princely hostage, and the Romans assumed he like what he had learned. Instead, he was learning the strengths and weaknesses of a Roman army and planning for the future.And what a remarkable plan. He worked his way into a position of trust under Publius Quinctilius Varus, the new governor of Rome's newest province - "Germania" - conquered by a massive army only the year before, and now being pacified with just three legions. They would have been enough against fragmented Germanic tribes, but Arminius - Hermann - had conjured an alliance of the tribes, brought together with the promise of easy pickings. Since Varus trusted Arminius for his tribal intelligence and reconnaissance, the pickings were easy indeed. Varus led his army down a narrow track, through swamps and heavy woods, where the German warriors waited.When several days of battle were over, somewhere between 15-20,000 Roman soldiers were dead. Three full legions had disappeared from the rolls, and would never be reconstituted! Roman retaliation would be terrible and prolonged, and Hermann would be killed by rival German chiefs. But the Empire never again tried to settle the land east of the Rhine.Why game a famous massacre? Though the ambush was perfectly set, these were trained Roman soldiers against a German mix of veteran warriors and farmers. It is more of an even fight than you might expect and the challenge will be to improve on the historic outcome.
