Battle of the Scheldt Folio Game Series (Ziplock)

The Devil's MoatThe Allied breakout from Normandy had cleared the Germans out of France and most of Belgium, but bogged down as it reached the German and Dutch borders. Partly this was due to supply overstretch as the Allies still depended on truck convoys from the invasion beaches. The key to restarting the offensive was opening up the port of Antwerp to Allied shipping, which entailed clearing the Germans out of the Scheldt estuary. The task, assigned to the First Canadian Army in November 1944, was no mere mopping up operation. The German Fifteenth Army had channelled the attack by flooding low-lying areas around the estuary, covering the remaining approach routes with carefully sighted artillery, snipers and mines to batter the attackers before they reached the main German line. The fighting to capture the largest port in Europe would be brutal but vitally necessary to the Allied campaign in Western Europe.Battle of the Scheldt uses the popular Fire and Movement combat system. The movement and combat systems are designed around the realities of mechanized warfare, giving motorized formations clear advantages over foot-borne units. Players can augment units at the instant of combat with support fire, provided by weapons ranging from mortars through cannon and light ground attack aircraft to heavy bombers. A seemingly predictable assault can be overturned at the last minute by heavy defending fires, while even small units may develop tremendous offensive punch with the assistance of heavy bombardment. Winning the battle is a matter of to manoeuvre, firepower and asset management.Not surprisingly, the Allies have greater resources at every level, plus the capability to launch seaborne attacks behind the German line. For their part, the Germans have good defensive positions and plenty of room for retreats to gain time. Salem Church: Mini Game Series (Ziplock)

East of Chancellorsville, 3-4 May 1863At the height of the battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863, a Union column attempted to flank the Confederate line. A lone Confederate brigade delayed the column at Salem Church, giving the Confederates time to reinforce the position. Eventually, the Confederates decided to focus on destroying the now-isolated Union column. In the early going of this game, the Union player must break through to reach the main battle. As Confederate reinforcements shift the balance of strength, the objectives also change to put the burden of attack on the South. Victory will go to the player who best understands the strengths and weaknesses of each side.Salem Church uses the QuickPlay version of the Musket & Saber system to simply yet accurately portray warfare during the muzzle-loading era. Combat is based on unit quality rather than raw numbers, and rewards use of historical tactics. Infantry, tough and resilient, bears the brunt of battle. Artillery can smash attacks or open holes in enemy lines, but is vulnerable and brittle. Cavalry is weak in stand-up combat, but crucial for pursuit and the occasional charge against a broken foe. All units are susceptible to rout when weakened, so players must maintain reserves.
