Roberts Award nominee, covers the first three months of the war on the Western Front, as Imperial Germany gambled its future on a decisive victory over the armies of France, Belgium, and Great Britain. The resulting stalemate doomed all of Europe to over 4 years of blood and destruction.1914: Glory's End manages to cover all the important characteristics of the campaign, with rules for Prepared and March Combat, trenches, forts, cavalry, command and control breakdowns, supply, strategic rail movement, Allied sea movement, German forced marching, Plan XVII, and more - all while remaining easy to play. The campaign game runs a full 30 turns, but includes both a mini-scenario on the Battle of the Marne, and a short ten turn campaign scenario covering the decisive opening weeks of the war. Rules cover German Heavy Artillery, the OberOst and Stavka Headquarters, Russian ammo shortages, fortifications, the Brusilov Offensive, the slow pace of Russian mobilization and Austrian Lock-Step Planning in the opening days of the war. A Random Events table covers the effects of the war's other fronts, and a short "What-if?" scenario is included assuming an initial German concentration in the east in August 1914.

Situation: The war raged across Germany from 1618 to 1630 with the Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor, retaining the upper hand. Then the tide of war changed when King Gustav Adolf of Sweden, the Lion of the North, revitalised the cause of the Protestant princes of Germany. The Swedes pushed their advantage towards the Emperor's most valuable ally, Maximillian of Bavaria. Though Catholic, France sought to keep the power of the Habsburgs in check by financially supporting the Swedish King. From 1632 to 1648, Bavaria and the surrounding area became a crucial battlefront to knocking Bavaria out of the war. The Swedes enjoyed success until fate removed their King and their over-extended forces could not hold onto their gains. France was forced to play a more active role or lose all she had paid for. The area became the proving ground of the greatest generals of the age - Gustav Adolf, Horn, Saxe-Weimar, Turenne, Condé, Mercy and de Werth.Won by the Sword is the first game in the Great Campaigns of the Thirty Years War series by Ben Hull, the award winning designer of the Musket & Pike Battle Series. This new series moves up to the operational level of warfare. It is a two-player game of campaigning where armies move across a point to point map of Southern Germany based on the road network available at the time. A turn is a month divided into five rounds. Each player has a hand of cards that control the amount of activity it may perform, the supplies it must expend, and a special action. Forces are concealed off-map so players are faced with limited knowledge of the enemy. The major activities are manoeuvre, foraging, besieging fortifications, and an occasional battle.Won by the Sword is a moderate complexity game with emphasis on the players manoeuvring their forces, rather than being encumbered with detail, to focus on choices regarding how to plan and manage his campaign. Won by the Sword includes full campaign and shorter battle scenarios from 1632 to 1648 with Swedish, French, Weimarian and Hessian forces facing off against Bavarian, Imperial and Spanish forces.
