La Belle Alliance aka Battle of Waterloo Folio Game (Ziplock)

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on the 18th of June 1815 between a French army under the command of Napoleon and the Anglo-Allied army under the command of Wellington. The French aim was to destroy Wellington's army in detail before Blucher's Prussian Corps could reinforce it. As the game begins, Wellington has carefully chosen a strong defensive position thus placing the initiative on Napoleon to attack.W1815 is a simple strategy game that simulates the key events of this famous battle in 15 minutes. The French side can try a number of different strategies in an attempt to crush the Anglo-Allied army before the Prussians arrive. Meanwhile, the Anglo-Allied player must focus on keeping his army in the battle by using reserves in the right situations until the Prussians get into the action.

The First Battle of The Marne

"Well, here at least is something out of the ordinary!" - Gen. Gallieni (on the taxis), quoted in Mitchell & Creasy's Twenty Decisive Battles of the WorldHow many battles have the word "miracle" attached to them? We can think of only one: The Marne. "The Miracle of the Marne".It DID appear to be a miracle. In the opening months of the war, the French had gone all-out in their Plan XVII offensives aimed at recapturing Alsace and Lorraine, losing a quarter of a million troops in the process. And nearly losing Paris as well. But the canny Joseph Gallieni, charged with defending Paris had done so by marshaling his forces and looking for the right opportunity to strike back. The Germans gave it to him.The Marne has many novel wrinkles. It was the first battle in which observation planes are credited with providing critical information - they spotted a gap between German armies and the opportune place for a counterattack. And, in the battle's most famous episode, 6000 troops were rushed from Paris in taxicabs (which did have their meters running!).What a shift in momentum. Paris went from being on the edge of capture...then two German armies were surrounded and destroyed. When it was over, the casualties were staggering. Two million men had participated. Half-a-million were lost. It was the largest “open field” operation of the war, with both sides fighting in desperation and the highest daily combined casualty counts of any battle in the war.The First Battle of Marne ended German hopes for a quick finish to the war, and set the stage for all that followed throughout the 20th Century. Can you do better?

The Valmy Campaign

We realise "Valmy" does not ring bells like Austerlitz, or Waterloo. Yet, of all the Twenty Decisive Battles of the World, Valmy may most deserve the title; not so much for what happened, but for what did not happen. Valmy could have marked the end of the French Revolution. The Valmy Campaign is one of the turning points of history... the end of the old quaint style of warfare under Kings and the beginning of the mass levies begun in the French Republic. It pitted the unproven revolutionary armies against the troops of Prussia, still living with the reputation gained under Frederick the Great, and aided by a coalition of Austrians, Hessians, and French Royalists... an army headed for Paris to put down the revolt once and for all. After the battle, the defeated Prussians retreated all the way back across the Rhine. When it was over - and only when it was over - did the National Convention in Paris abolish the monarchy and proclaim the French Republic.

Hastings 1066AD

"Like 'Trial by Combat' for two very different armies..."- Mitchell & Creasy's Twenty Decisive Battles of the WorldWhen King Edward the Confessor died childless, three very different men claimed the throne of England. Harold Godwinson was the overwhelming "local" choice, named by Edward and actually elected to the position by the most powerful English lords. But Harald Hardrada, from Norway, had a claim that came from Edward's predecessor, Harthacanute. And Edward's distant cousin, William II of Normandy, also claimed a promise from Edward and an oath from Harold as his entry to the throne. Hardrada came fast. William took the time to add a large mercenary contingent to his Norman army, and to secure (with the help of a large bribe) the "Papal banner" and blessings from the Pope for his invasion. While Harold Godwinson was defeating the Vikings in the north of England, William finally landed in the south and began pillaging the area, both to appease his mercenaries and to draw Harold to him. It worked. Harold brought the remnants of his battered army all the way from York in a march that would be considered legendary (if they had won). Though his brothers encouraged caution and a savvy plan to give Harold time to gain strength, Harold seemed obsessed with the fact that the Pope was on William's side. He looked for head-to-head combat to "Let God decide".The tactics of the battle are well-known. Failing to surprise William in camp, Harold lined his army up on the best ground he could find and dared William to take it from him.The rest is up to you. Can your Saxon shield wall, made up from housecarls and farmers, fend off the professionals in William's army? Can your Norman army use its greater mobility and floods of arrows to capture a kingdom for your Duke?
