A raid on Caer Colun

In April in the year of our Lord 540, the Saxon Raedwald sought fame
and fortune, and he gathered men, and departed his father's lands in
Ceint to raid the British kingdom of Caer Colun. Here the Lord Uther
the proud, Magister Militum, gathered a force to oppose him.

The Saxons approached under cover of darkness, and had reached the
farm of Owain as day broke (3 free moves for the raiders), but Uther
was well prepared (rolled a 6 for number of units to bring on). One
group of Saxons searched the nearest building while the rest engaged
in fierce combat, putting the British levies to flight, but Lord
Uther, leading his household troops, counterattacked and threw them
back. The Saxons brought up the remainder of their hearthguard, and
further fighting saw both sides exhausted, the Saxons retreating while
the Britons were happy to see them go, looting the bodies of the
fallen Saxon Hearthguard (Saxon morale collapsed after the second
hearthguard unit broke, but the Britons were down to morale 1 by this
stage).

Our second game of Dux Brit, and the first one with a campaign
background. The Saxons got no loot; moderate losses on both sides, the
Britons got some loot, but their Thrifty leader is reluctant to spend
it.
Both sides will have recovered their moderate losses in 2 months - so
next Saxon raid will be in June.

a reporters view on some trouble in Reghin

Quote
It has now been confirmed by local authorities that group Saxons of yet unspecified size was confronted yesterday near a farm in neighborhood of Anderitum, Rhegin. First reports indicate that local government official, tribune Marcus, son of Marcus, preferred to slash with sword first and ask questions later and that the Saxon party was completely scattered in armed incident that followed initial encounter. Thus only speculations could be offered about the purpose of this unauthorized landing.

From facts available at the moment, it is apparent that armed response of local levy and regional armed forces was quick and decisive. Unfortunately, the armed clash took partially place at a farm located nearby, shocking the inhabitants and animals. Elder of the family told us that a group of Saxons was cornered in one of the houses by local warriors, panicked and tried their best to get away, but was mercilessly slaughtered in the confines of the hovel. This event was especially aggravating to local peasants, who complain bitterly that they were left to their own devices with cleaning up the mess. "It's so typical that this would happen now, just after we were done with our yearly Christmas cleaning! Do you have any idea how hard it is to clean up guts from wattle?" lamented the local housewife.

Question thus arises - should those unlucky Saxons who survived the initial clash of arms have been given chance to surrender and be later evicted from our lands or was their slaying justified and lawful? This monk expects for the question to be discussed by highest Lards of the land and for subsequent ruling to become the precedent for similar situations that are expected to occur in the future.

Further questions arose in the aftermath of yesterday's incident. Tribune Marcus, leader of the rapid reaction force which according to him "dealt with Saxon pigs swiftly and decisively", claimed he was entitled the credit for 'successful raid or battle won' on evaluation report customarily performed after incidents of this sort. Saxon representatives to local court, who already sent in a complaint over what they call "harsh and out of proportions reaction over an unlucky case of faulty navigation", also pointed out that since it is impossible for a local lord to claim that he performed a successful raid against his own subjects, it would be bizarre for evaluation board to praise tribune Marcus for such feat. The claim has now been forwarded to the board of elders, who usually deal with this type of issues. Ruling is expected to be announced shortly, but probably not before the festivities celebrating start of our Lord's year 477 have taken place.
