Settlers of Catan (Die Seidler von Catan)

This is a really exciting fun game with lots of replayability. Most of the times we play this game we play several in a row.

This is a great mix of resource management, trading, strategy and construction. Although there are random elements in how resources are generated this is only a small part of the overall game. Most of the game involves how to use the resources you have and how to expand your settlements

The winner is the first to 10 Victory points, each settlement is worth 1, towns 2 there are also two specialist cards worth 2 points for having the longest road or Largest Army.

There is plenty to keep your mind occupied in this game, at the beginning of it certain resources are more useful than others and later in the game these same resources are less important. This means you have to make careful choices on where to place settlements in order to get the resources you need. As you can not get every resource you need at the start you have to plan carefully in order to progress. There are development cards which can be bought which provide additional victory points or several different enhancements to aid your progress.

With expansions you can increase the number of players from 3-4 to 5-6. The game plays well with any number of players and is always enjoyable. I can not recommend this game enough it is an essential part of your collection.

I don't know who else knows this, but Settlers of Catan is actually available on XBox Live Arcade.  It costs about 800 microsoft points, which I think is about six quid.  Good game and I enjoy it a lot.  I've not played against players on XBox Live yet, as the part I liked best from this game was all the banter that went on.  Trying to con, pressure and otherwise cajole people into trading.  If anyone has an XBox 360 then they can find me with the gamertag Nomad3k.
